Subject line: Australia must condemn Turkey’s bombing of innocent civilians in Kurdistan

Dear [PARLIAMENTARIAN FIRST + LAST NAME] MP

My name is [FIRST NAME] [LAST NAME] from [SUBURB] and I am one of your constituents.

I write to you today to voice my concern on an issue that is incredibly important to me. On 15 June 2020, the Turkish government launched Operation Claw–Eagle, an on-going series of aerial bombings of the semi- autonomous Kurdish Region of Iraq (KRI). Operation Claw-Eagle represents a breach of sovereign borders and lethal military incursions into protected Kurdish governed territory. This act constitutes an illegal military incursion by a NATO ally into sovereign airspace governed by the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi Government. This is a flagrant breach of international law, rendered only more malicious in the context of the COVID- 19 health crisis unfolding across the world.

Over the past fortnight it has become clear that Turkey is not “neutralising terrorists” as it claims, but rather murdering innocent Kurdish children, unarmed Kurdish civilians and displaced Kurdish refugees through their use of indiscriminate bombings across their border. Reports from Kurdish and Iraqi media sources have confirmed that amongst the victims are children, displaced Kurds in a refugee camp and a Kurdish family on a picnic. These are just some of the innocent Kurdish lives murdered by Turkish bombs in the past fortnight.

This is not the first time Turkey has used targeted military violence against peaceful and unarmed Kurdish civilians across sovereign borders. In October 2019, Turkey launched its cynically named Operation Peace Spring: a brutal and deadly military invasion of the Kurdish region of Rojava, North West Syria, which saw scores of Kurds killed and hundreds of thousands displaced.

Turkey has long held a desire to eradicate Kurds. It takes every opportunity to oppress, maim, injure and murder Kurdish populations both within its borders and in neighbouring countries. As former United States National Security Advisor John Bolton recently recounted, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told President Trump “the only good Kurd is a dead Kurd”. If left unchallenged, Erdogan will continue to kill innocent Kurdish lives with murderous intent and genocidal zeal.

As an Australian, I am appalled by Turkey’s continued violence against the Kurds and deeply disappointed that my Government is not doing more to protect and ensure the safety of our Kurdish allies and mates. I call upon you, as my elected Representative, to condemn Turkey and demand it immediately cease its deadly aerial attacks and use of indiscriminate force leading to the deaths of children, unarmed civilians and displaced refugees across the border.

I call upon you, as my elected Representative, to protect the Kurdish people. The Kurds have been proud and loyal allies to Australia and the West. It is time for Australia to stand by its Kurdish mates and stand for what is right and just.

We cannot continue to allow a NATO ally to continuously breach international law and international human rights by murdering and bombing Kurds across sovereign borders while the world is distracted by dealing with COVID-19.

I stand with the Australian Kurdish community. I sincerely hope you will too. I look forward to your response.

Kind regards
